Texaco Metropolitan Opera

Monaural broadcasts on Texaco Metropolitan Opera Radio Network

Announced by Milton Cross, official commentator for the Met 1935 - 1974. Originally performances were at the old Metropoliltan Opera House which was alive with audience reaction. First public performance from Avery Fischer Hall, Lincoln Center was September 16, 1966. Live performance operas typically run 3 to 4 hours because of the time required to make scene changes between acts. Peter Allen served as Metropolitan Opera announcer until retirement in 2004, when Margaret Juntwait of WNYC-FM will take over the Saturday afternoon broadcasts.
